Latest version of jruby-prof is compiled against Java 6. Since JRuby can run on Java 5 you may want to build releases with Java 5 bytecode as a target.

wouldn't it be possible to release it with a .java file and compile automagically?

It certainly would be possible but there is not much advantage to it as a practice. So long as JRuby supports Java 5 people should just compile against 5 and it works everywhere. It shouldn't make any difference perfwise either.
